Dr Abbass is professor and Director of Education at the Dalhousie University Department of Psychiatry in Halifax, Canada. He is also founding Director of the Centre for Emotions and Health at Dalhousie University.
A recognized expert teacher and researcher in emotion-focused, short-term dynamic psychotherapy, Dr Abbass teaches around the globe and has research collaborations with several institutions. He has over 100 publications in the area of emotion regulation and the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of short-term psychotherapy. One of his recent studies is on the effectiveness of short-term dynamic psychotherapy for children and adolescents.
He has received teaching awards including a national award for developing training programs in short-term dynamic psychotherapy. He has also won an award for innovation and national recognition for developing brief psychotherapy services for people presenting to emergency departments with medically unexplained symptoms. He presents frequently to governments, legal associations and insurance providers about the effectiveness and cost-benefits of these brief, emotion-focused psychotherapies.
